Working Through the Red Mist

Aim

Delegates learn to break bad news intelligently, dealing with the explosive or emotive reactions that can follow.

Target Audience

All political members dealing with casework.

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop participants will know how to:

  • Prepare for contentious meetings;
  • Not submit to aggression or submission when discussing sticky problems;
  • Break bad news without making a mess;
  • Calm irate or upset individuals;
  • Not become embroiled in an argument;
  • Manage their non-verbal communication;
  • Not let status dominate meetings.

Methods

Delegates learn how to break bad news in a profession, delicate manner via a presentation and group exercises. Then, having been given a scenario, each delegate will enter into a role-play situation in which they have to break bad news regarding casework to a resident or colleague. The colleague or constituent is played by an actor.
