Straight Talking

Aim

Delegates learn how to stand up for their rights within or outside the working environment.

Target Audience

Anyone who feels tempted to use aggression to get what they want, or those who frequently sacrifice their own needs to avoid rocking the boat.

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop participants will know how to:

  • Prepare for contentious meetings;
  • Not submit to aggression or submission when discussing sticky problems;
  • Break bad news without making a mess;
  • Speak confidently and with honesty;
  • Say “No!”
  • Deal effectively with manipulative / hostile people;
  • Not let status dominate conversations;
  • Manage non-verbal communication to help promote their causes.

Methods

Various assertiveness techniques are imparted via a presentation and group exercises. Then, having been given a scenario, each delegate will enter into a role-play situation in which they will talk to a constituent or council officer about an issue they’re unhappy with, or they’ll be paid a surprise visit by an irate ward member.  The colleague / constituent / officer is played by an actor.
